William's Story
After BHS I spent 4 years at CSM getting a hand full of aviation licenses. At the same time I was working at San Carlos Airport. In 1963 I was drafted into the U.S. Army and after Fort Ord I spent some time at Ft. Eustis, VA and Ft. Benning, GA in air traffic control, i.e. the tower. I returned to Burlingame from Korea in June 1965 after 14 months in 8 th Army Aviation Headquarters as an aviation engineer. I married my girl friend, Patricia Ann Ayers (Woodside High 1960), in July and then went to work for United Airlines in August of 1965. I flew the DC-6, DC-7, B-727, B-737, B-747, B-757, and B-767. Pat and I spent a year living TDY in London, England while I flew the B-727 for United around Europe. I flew my last trip as a Captain, in a Boeing 747, from Hawai'i to San Francisco on March 6, 2000 with my whole family on board (Captains / Pilots in 2000 could not ...Expand for more
fly past.. age 60), I also retired from the San Mateo Co. Sheriffs Air Squadron after 32 years flying airplanes as required. We have a son, Bill, born in '68, a daughter, Erin, born in '70, and a granddaughter, Amanda, born in '06. I spent 25 years helping my wife with her very successful catering business. Pat and I have done a lot of traveling, land, sea and air, and we spend a great deal of time at our other home on Bass lake, CA above Fresno. Pat and I have been around the world and we have never lived outside San Mateo County. We still enjoy our season tickets to the Niners games (don't go there). I spend some of my spare time flying antique airplanes out of San Carlos Airport. For a couple of years I was giving tours of the Peninsula in a 1935 WACO open cockpit biplane. I have another antique airplane, a 1946 Swift, that I keep in our hangar at San Carlos Airport.
